[Saturday, 29th August – Weather still bad – tiring walk across the Brünig [Pass] – the indifferent German ass at the Chapel – valleys and streams – views of the Oberhasli Valley – torrents down from the sky and the mountains – Brienz – wet and cold – Gruner from Osnabrück – ride to the Giessbach [Falls] – the beautiful and strong boatwoman (4) – tiring ascent – the Giessbach (2) in all its beauty – the schoolmaster’s house – piano – songs of the Brienz girls (1), very wistful and peculiar - the Alps, shrouded – storm on the Lake and the smiling boatwoman – in its double meaning – table d’hôte in Brienz (3) – Michel, adjutant of General Erhard – the sluggish Englishman with the straw hat – terrible ride over Lake Brienz – terrible cold – the guide’s judgement of Rotteck – sleep – arriving in Interlacken [sic] (5) – changing clothes – the Englishmen at the table d’hôte – nothing appealing – tea – reading Petrarch – dinner with Gruner and a humble Englishman – stormy and sulky weather – vin de Neuchâtel and sleeping almost on the floor.]
